  September to May. The whaling chapters are the ones people warn you about and they turned out to be my favourite part; a few pages of rope or blubber is about right for a Tuesday.

  Four pages a night suits this one better than most. He wasn't writing a book, he was talking himself round, and you can take him in small doses without losing anything. I've been through it twice now.

  Read some of it aloud to myself, quietly, which I'd never done with any other book. Bree, the Barrow-downs, the long stretch of walking that everybody complains about. I liked the walking best.

  October to the following June. An enormous book read at the speed of a glacier, which I don't think did it any favours. Kaladin I could follow, and the bridge runs stayed with me. The rest went past in the dark.

  The first part, with the boy and the animals, is lovely and I would happily have stayed there. It gets sadder than I was expecting. My wife found me a hardback of it in a shop in Ludlow, which helped.

  This one defeated me. March to somewhere in the autumn, and I could not hold any of it in my head from one night to the next. Not the book's fault. Probably not mine either. We simply weren't suited.
