Reader’s Note

8 out of 10

A log, since I can't honestly review it properly.

  • Started: 14 September
  • Finished: 2 May
  • Nights on it: somewhere around two hundred and thirty, on and off
  • Nights I went under before the pages were done: 41 that I marked in the back, almost certainly more
  • Nights I had to reread the night before to know where I was: too many to count, and nearly all of them in the catalogue of ships
  • Bookmark: a train ticket to Chester, gone soft as cloth by the end
  • Lamp: the small brass one, which my wife says is far too dim and she is right
  • Verdict: the fighting blurs together after a while. The grief does not. Priam in the tent asking for his son back was worth the whole winter.
