  Chigurh's a brilliant lump of nothing and the coin works right up until it becomes the entire character. Eight. The big death happening offstage annoyed me for a week and then I decided it was the best bit, which is how you know it's good.

  Two hundred and sixty years old and still the most formally reckless novel in English. The black page, the marbled page, the squiggle! Whatever you do, get an edition that reproduces them properly; the Norton does, several cheap reprints print a grey rectangle and hope.

  Two days in October mizzle, and the whole time wanting to shake him. The countryside chapters are better than people allow — he stops at hedges he has no vocabulary for and can't say why. That's the sad part, for me. Not the letters.

  The Hays translation reads like a man talking to himself at four in the morning, which is what it is. Avoid editions that call Book II 'timeless wisdom' on the cover; Marcus was not writing for you and the book is better for it.
