Reader’s Note

7 out of 10

My niece made me. I liked it. That's all she's getting out of me.

Not my genre, not my age group, and I read the lot on a Sunday because my niece put it in my bag without mentioning it.

It moves. Whatever else you want to say, the thing moves, and the section before the games start is better than the games themselves, which I gather is a minority position in her class.

I'm not describing the arena. I know there are films. I know everybody has seen them. I'm still not doing it, because somebody's twelve-year-old is going to come to this fresh next year and it isn't going to be me who wrecks it.

I called one death the moment a certain character was introduced, and had to put the book down on the sofa and go and make tea, which my husband found extremely funny.

Seven, because the last quarter leans on a rule change I didn't buy for a second, and because I'm a woman of 41 being asked to care about a love triangle.

Book two is on the shelf. I'll get there.
