Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12 with her mother and her sister Prim. She hunts outside the fence with Gale. Once a year one boy and one girl from each district are picked for a televised fight to the death. Prim's name comes out of the bowl. Katniss volunteers to go instead.
The boy picked is Peeta Mellark, a baker's son. They travel to the Capitol with Effie Trinkett and with Haymitch Abernathy, who won years earlier and drinks. Cinna designs their costumes and sets them on fire for the opening parade.
There are twenty-four tributes from thirteen districts. They train, they are given scores, they are interviewed on television. Peeta says during his interview that he has liked Katniss since school.
In the arena there is a supply pile at the start, a fire, a nest of wasps, an alliance, and a girl from District 11 named Rue. The rules are changed part way through and then changed back at the end.
Katniss and Peeta spend the last section together in a cave. The ending involves berries. There are two more books after this one.
