Yes I've read it now. No, I'm not discussing it.

Everyone else did this at school and I didn't, so I've done it at 41, on a week off, in a garden. And I'm still not going to tell you what happens, because somebody out there hasn't read it either and I refuse to be the one who ruins a seventy-odd-year-old book for them.

What I'll say: the opening quarter is a proper thriller. Two people doing something they shouldn't, a room, a rule, a risk, and a very slow tightening. I was reading it at traffic lights.

Then there's a long stretch where the story stops dead and hands you a document to read instead, and I skimmed it, and my husband says that makes me a philistine. Fine! It's still a great slab of exposition dropped into the middle of a chase.

The last section I saw coming in the general sense, not the specific one. Didn't help. Didn't want it.

Not my genre and I'm not sure I'd have finished it if it were any longer. Somewhere around sixth for my year, which given what's above it is no insult at all.
