  The village chorus pages were the best thing I read that whole March, and the plot they're pinned to is far less interesting than they are. Read it in one sitting with a woodpecker going in the ash. Still not sure about the ending.

  There's a thrush in the wood where they meet and Orwell gives it a whole paragraph — the one living thing in the book. I notice I've kept that and not the torture. Admirable, horrible, and I don't expect I'll open it again.

  the merchant and the alchemist's gate is the one i keep going back to. the notes at the back tell you what problem each story was solving, which is what notes are for.

  Not one plant is named in the whole novel, not one, and the meadow and the grass and the Sun have to carry the lot. Beautifully controlled, and it left me completely cold, which I suspect is a design feature I don't enjoy.

  The cat! I've never laughed so hard at a book about the secret police. Amaya Lacasa's Spanish keeps the jokes; the English I started with had flattened them into something merely clever.
