Reader’s Note

8 out of 10

Solid 8 for the set.

Bought the omnibus because it was nine quid and the three separate ones were twelve each. Nine quid! Why would you not?

Book one is a nine. Book two is a seven. Book three is a six and a half, and I've rounded the lot up to an eight because the set as one lump is better than the average of its parts, and that's a hill I'll happily die on.

What's good: the training, the poison, the fact that a mentor actually does the horrible thing instead of just threatening it. Weeks isn't frightened of a body count and the magic has teeth.

What isn't: every woman in it gets a tragic backstory doing the job a personality should be doing, and by the third one everybody's a chosen one. The scale goes daft. It starts as blokes in alleys and finishes up gods, and I want the alleys.

Also the physical object is a brick and I dropped it on my own face in bed, twice. Not scoring that but it's information.
