A man gets off a bus and is arrested.

Jack Reacher gets off a bus at a road junction and walks into Margrave, Georgia, because a blues musician he read about died nearby. He orders eggs and coffee in a diner. The police come in and arrest him for a murder committed the night before.
The detective is Findlay. A patrol officer, Roscoe, checks his account and finds he was in Tampa when the man died. The dead man is Reacher's brother Joe, who worked for the Treasury.
Reacher and Roscoe start working together. A banker named Hubble is arrested at the same time, says nothing for two days, and then talks. The town is repainted, quiet and well funded, and the money comes from a family called Kliner.
Reacher goes to New York, then to Tampa, then back to Georgia. Several people are killed while he is away, including a police officer. He works out what is being made in the warehouses and when the next shipment is due.
The last section takes place over one night at the warehouse. Reacher leaves town afterwards. Roscoe stays.
